Saving Anime (again) without using AI
An edition about projects that I never made and others that really happened
HELLO AND WELCOME TO A NEW EDITION OF MY NEWSLETTER!
Hi to everyone! This has been a strange and sad month, due to the terrible floods that punished part of Spain, focusing especially on my homeland, Valencia. For non-Spanish readers, I live in the north of the country but I was born and raised in the East, in the Mediterranean side of Spain. All my family, high-school and college friends live there. I had been visiting my family, less than a week before the catastrophe began.
I feel lucky because I have not any loss to lament, but more that 200 have died, and other gotten injured or are still missing. It’s going to be a big hit to the zone, and people have lost homes, jobs and more. Valencia will take a long time, even years, to recover from it totally. And when you live far from your homeland, you feel powerless because you can’t help. The only thing I can do is try to cheer up my dear ones from a distance, share information and donate to organizations like the Red Cross, who are working so hard on the field.
But life goes on, and I’m sure you want to read some funny things and suffer some spam. Let 's go!
ONLINE STORE
Just a quick reminder that now that Inktober is over, I'm going to be updating my online store on a fairly regular basis with original art, signed and sketched books... Don't forget that by clicking on the Shop section you can filter the products by categories, series, etc.
CASSANDRA IS HERE WITH A VENGEANCE
Cassandra: La Mano Izquierda del Diablo, my new oncoming graphic novel for Spain, published by ECC, is based on my TV series project Left Hand of the Devil that I developed with Japanese director Mutsuki Kameyama, British screenwriter Anthony Alleyne and Irish producer Paul Fitzsimons.
This story is influenced by manga comics, 60-70s Shaw Brothers films (with their one-handed fighters and swordsmen sagas at the forefront), recent Korean cinema by Lee Jeong-Beom or Kim Jee-Woon, and the novels by Kotaro Isaka.
The book will published in a very beautiful oversized hard cover edition this January . Meanwhile, this TV crazy martial arts project with Irish-Japanese-British production continues its slow course. Whether it ends up being something you can see on your screens, time and the whims of the audiovisual market will tell. For now, you have my vision in panels of this story of revenge.
People for ECC has trying to sell the license to foreign publishers using an advance of the first two chapters I translated and lettered to English with the help of Anthony, so I hope I can announce an English language version soon.
FROM THE VAULT OF OLD PROJECTS, POLAR THE ANIME (PART 2)
In the previous newsletter I showed you character designs I made for a potential Polar anime project. The idea didn't cross the first barrier but it was a funny exercise.
Today I bring you some concept art I made, based on some scenes from the movie:
I also a made this kind of “presentation poster”, not sure what’s the correct term:
I must clarify this is something I made during 2019, so I didn't use an AI app and said “do the Polar movie with this 90s Japanese aesthetics”. It's me 100% playing with pencils, inks and Photoshop. I hope you enjoyed it.
And who knows, if someone has the phone number of Yoshiaki Kawajiri or Genndy Tartakovsky, feel free to recommend it to them.
I think my space and time available end here!
I haven't had time to write any reviews about things I've read or seen in this occasion. We'll leave it for next time.
Take care and see you soon!
