Paranoia Killer
WELCOME TO A SPECIAL EDITION OF THE NEWSLETTER
The news I was delaying in previous newsletters: You can find the first issue (of 4) of my new series PARANOIA KILLER in the digital comics platform Panel Syndicate.
Unlike other digital comics platforms, Panel Syndicate's model is pay-what-you-want. Like other books on the platform, we're releasing Paranoia Killer in two formats, one for computers in a widescreen view, and a single-page view for ipads or smartphones. And in two languages: English and Spanish.
You can grab yourself a copy of Paranoia Killer at this link. And if you like it, please pass that link around, share and share. It helps a lot.
Since Panel Syndicate began with The Private Eye some years ago, I have been a devoted fan of this initiative promoted by Marcos Martín and Brian K. Vaughan. And I have bought every book they have released with an almost religious determination.
It’s an honor to share virtual space with friends and creators I admire like Marcos and Brian, Ed Brubaker, David López, Albert Monteys, Ken Niimura, Alex de Campi and more.
The intention is to release every issue monthly. The book (in four chapters) is practically finished, except some ome little details need to be fixed for the Panel Syndicate edition. So you will can read the complete story along the next months.
And what is Paranoia Killer about? Sharing a quote I have used in the issue 1 afterword:
“It's like Tezuka’s Princess Knight by way of Philip K. Dick.”
What a bait!
Basically, in early 2020 I was working on two projects that were temporarily frozen. One of them was in collaboration with artist Mike Oeming and had a lot of references to Stanley Kubrick and Philip K. Dick. I was reading Valis, Ubik and Time out of joint and suddenly a real dystopia named COVID hit us globally. With these other projects frozen, I began to write and mixed these recent readings and my personal feelings about the world situation with other of my recent personal obsessions such as the rise of private armies (I had just read Jeremy Schahill's book on the private contractor Blackwater) or the theories about the mind control of soldiers (such as Project MK Ultra or the movie The Manchurian candidate).
And you can add to the mix some conversations I had with other authors about manga and cartoons and how manga/anime can make crazy concepts work.
The final result is Paranoia Killer, I don’t want to tell you too much about the plot. You will find action, a mystery, conspiracies and crazy psychedelic SciFi. And I have done all the stages of the creation, from script and drawing to the colors, the lettering and the logo design. A letter of love to the "do-it-yourself" fanzine culture where I born as creator.
Here are some pages of this first issue:
I hope you like it. As I said, sharing the link and your opinions helps a lot.
This is a hard time for independent creators, and I feel it more stifling every day. We share a little space inside the cracks of the giant global franchises. Word of mouth, sharing links friend-to-friend is our only weapon. The basic tool of a friend recommending a book to a friend.
See you very soon with more news about Paranoia killer and other projects I am involved!
