Ginger Revenges Bonus Track
Taking a look at the creative process of Ginger Revenges
Hi! The Ginger Revenges series has finished but I want to share some of the process behind the series with you, A WIP focused on the character designs.
First designs. I had Ginger’s look very clear in my mind, but I wasn’t sure about Russell’s age and complexion. My first idea was something near actor Ed Harris but I decided later that I wanted a more physically intimidating presence.
The cast was different originally, the designs were less “extreme”, and Aleksander was pretty different.
The designs were correct but they looked too “bland” to me. I took inspiration from Osamu Tezuka’s works and how his cartoony and “childish” (this is a questionable label) designs can work in adult stories. I passed these drawings through a “geometric filter” to make them more simple but expressive.
After the first attempts, I polished the designs to something I could work with. In this part of the process I’m not looking for nicely illustrated images. I’m looking for a guide for the future process of drawing the pages.
After finishing the serialization, I thought about the possibilities of this story in other media. Sometimes I’m not sure why I do what I do, just an intuition, but I made these designs in this way. I could produce a profile of every character for a bible for a future TV show? Maybe I'll do some stickers with them. I don’t know, but I wanted to draw them again.
I hope you enjoyed this bonus chapter.
I’ll return with a new regular edition of the newsletter soon. Not sure exactly when, because the end of August/beginning of September used to be a complicated time for me trying to balance holidays and last hour assignments. So sooner or later, I will be here to tell you.
