Don't be a dick with your buddies
An edition about supporting your colleagues, how hard is a crowdfunding and with Fisto demolishing a wall.
WELCOME TO A NEW EDITION OF MY NEWSLETTER
This month and due to the crowdfunding campaign of my book MOON EATERS I am updating my newsletter WEEKLY, and using the chance to talk about different subjects.
MOON EATERS KEEP FIGHTING
THE REMINDER:
MOON EATERS is a crime/supernatural story, a tribute to classics movies like Assault of Precinct 13, Escape from New York or In the Mouth of Madness, or a kind of Banshee meets Supernatural if you prefer comparison with TV shows.
The book is available in two languages, Spanish and English, and it doesn’´t matter where in the world you live. We can send it to you. It’s going to be an beautiful oversized hardcover with a gorgeous paper with a cover prize of 23 ($27). And if you buy the book you receive a signed print and a sketchbook with all the storyboard of the graphic novel for free!

And now, the human drama. I will not lie to you: I discovered crowdfunding is a hard task (well done, Victor, you always were a clever boy).
The point is: You need to show the project to the potential supporters but you don’t want to be the “spam guy”. You don’t want to annoy people but you know the algorithm is working against you and your followers are only reading 10% of your posts/tweets/etc… You need to find the balance. And it’s hard because you fight against the frustration when you don’t nail the campaign from the very beginning. Right now we have almost 50% and 11 days left. My main fear is that percentage could scare potential supporters. Maybe they will think “if the project is not going to be funded, it isn’t worth wasting precious time buying the book.”
We are determined to make the book a reality even if we don’t get all the money we need, and the closer we arrive at the goal, the easier it is to carry out the book compensating the money difference.
So share if you have the chance. Any support, even if you are not a popular guy with thousands of followers, helps a lot.
And speaking of popular (and handsome) guys, I feel happy that friend collaborators like Kenny Ruiz, Jesús Alonso Iglesias, Pere Pérez and others, and colleagues like Juan Torres, Ken Niimura or David Rubin are sharing my Moon Eaters links and encouraging people to support it. For David is almost a personal crusade, and I think we both (and many other Spanish artists and writers) share the passion and the need to work from our own country and tell the stories we love in our own language . We are writers and complete creators and even if we have the chance to work with more exposure and money in markets like the USA, at the end we need to “return home” from time to time and feel we are helping to build a kind of industry with our own rules. So I feel honored by this friendship and solidarity with other creators and I feel we are not really contenders... And this is something I can say for sure: The success of a colleague doesn’t harm you, in the end it benefits you. So don’t be a dick and support your professional colleagues.
(I used some Moon Eaters illustrations during this proclamation to make your reading less boring. Thank you for attention)
THE INKTOBER IS MARCHING ON
My usual rules: One (traditionally) inked drawing every day until the end of the month, not spending more than 30 minutes in a drawing on a 21x29,7 cm (8,3x11,7 inches) Bristol sheet.
This year I am drawing characters from the MOTU (Masters of the Universe) universe. SO WELCOME TO THE #MOTUTOBER
People ask me if I have a list. Lately I have seen how the artists publish the complete list in their social network and which character/whatever they are going to draw every day. In my MOTUtober I keep in mind some of them I have to do for sure (you know, the big fishes: Heman, Skeletor, Hordak...) but I don’t know which I will do until I begin to draw. I want to keep the fun of the experience. If I make a list I will begin to think of it as an assignment. So let’s see what happens!
I will be uploading the drawings in my facebook, twitter and Instagram account (links at the bottom) and selling them in my big cartel store:
https://victorsantos.bigcartel.com/
Andi f you want to see all my scanned drawings of this edition and the editions of previous years you can find them in my blog/site:
https://victorsantoscomics.blogspot.com/search/label/inktober
And that’s all! I will keep fighting until the end of the campaign and I will tell you more very soon!
