Do you remember Damager, that guy from the 90s?
An extra edition with info about my new superhero-crime series UNTIL MY KNUCKELS BLEED
WELCOME TO A NEW EDITION OF MY NEWSLETTER
I know I had said maybe you will not have news from me in a couple of weeks or even a month, but I had some recent news to share. I wasn’t sure about the specific dates for solicits and when the official announcement would be done.
A have created, written and drawn a new series for Behemot comics, a noir-superhero story titled UNTIL MY KNUCKLES BLEED.
The plot (taken for the Previews page) is this:
From the creator of the bestseller comic Polar, now a NETFLIX'S HIT MOVIE starring Mads Mikkelsen, comes a new creator owned series. A tale of crime and capes in the line of THE BOYS, WATCHMEN and SIN CITY. The 90s were the most extreme age of the superheroes... But times change. Gabin Hart, AKA Damager, now works as a bouncer in a strip club managed by the Russian mob, hangs out sporadically with his ex Avengelady, and wrestles with the long term effects of his cyber-implants. But Fate always keeps one last cheap shot up its sleeve for a hero.
What do you think? I hope this concept sounds exciting!
The origin of this story comes from the idea of making my own superhero book. I had drawn something in this line (Black Market, written by my good friend Frank Barbiere for Boom! studios) but I had never written this kind of story for the USA market. And thinking about my own superhero readings, I remembered that my real first contact with the genre was with the Image and Dark Horse comics from the 90s. I was a Manga reader then, and when I tried to read Marvel or DC books, they were too obscure, too many references to a past I didn’t know. So comics like Spawn, Ghost, Savage Dragon, X or Wildcats were easier to understand and enjoy.
So I began to think about this “grim and gritty” era and how these characters could age, what problems they will have, like those elite athletes who have a lot of medical problems after retiring. That’s the origin of the story and I had a lot of fun doing the pages set during the 90s in a very “Extreme” style, and creating names like Damager, Deathwisher or Bloodspur. At the same time it’s a sad and intimate story about a guy who questions his own big life decisions.
Some links:
-The solicitations of Previews page of the issue 1 with some preview pages.
-A Bleeding Cool list of the Behemot solicits where you can see of all the variant covers I have done for the issue 1 (something that seems appropiate for a tribute to the 90s comic-books)
-And if you are collector and want to get all the comic variants, stadium comics gives you the chance.
I will tell you more things about the creative process of this new series in future newsletters. Meanwhile, reserve your issue 1 in your favorite bookstore.
See you soon!
